How to remain "relevant" in the job market

Hacker News - Thu, 09/19/2024 - 4:17pm

I am "older", oh well, it happens to everyone.

I work in operations for a life-science company in NYC, and unfortunately the company is on its way out due to mismanagement and lack of funds.

Through the years I have carved myself a niche where I am a ops guy with strong systems/data science (more like data analytics) skills.

And now I have become an experts in AI tools in my industry (not that many, yet).

I have been looking for a job on and off for 9 months now, and I sent lots of resumes out, but very few interviews, and no offers.

But both during my interviews and in the job posts, I don't see any mentions of AI skills, AI tools. This is 2024 after all, and I am in NYC!!!

Am I missing something? Where/How do I find innovative companies that are looking for AI (and data) savvy workers?

T.I.A.

Tell HN: ProtonMail has been sabotaging user privacy and security

Hacker News - Thu, 09/19/2024 - 4:17pm

Proton Mail sent me the following email:

> Subject: Complete your security setup: Add recovery options now

Content excerpt:

> Complete your recovery setup

> To further enhance your experience, we recommend reviewing your account’s recovery settings. Currently, your security setup is not fully complete, which could leave you vulnerable.

> Why does this matter?

> Having both account and data recovery options ensures that you can always regain access to your services and data, even if something unexpected happens. Remember, not even Proton can recover your data if you lose access without these options set.

(blah blah, more of the same)

---

I understand all this, but I also understand that "recovery options" are the easiest way to actually lose your account and/or its privacy. Whenever a recovery option gets compromised, there goes the Proton account too. This is particularly easy with a phone number. As for an alternate email address being used for recovery, the government is known to have jumped on to it to force themselves into accessing one's Proton account. Proton not being able to recover my data is the point!

Proton knows this very well, but they psychologically con and strongarm users into adding recovery options anyway. And as for those who can't store their own password securely, they shouldn't be using Proton in the first place.

Ask HN: Datacenters in Space Before Alaska?

Hacker News - Thu, 09/19/2024 - 4:15pm

I am curious as to why there is already talk of putting data centers into space rather than the much more manageable cold locations we have in the states such as Alaska. Does anyone here know by chance?

Ask HN: What's up with live location timer defaults?

Hacker News - Thu, 09/19/2024 - 3:45pm

This is a minor nitpick that just irks me to no end, but I figured there weren't many good places to ask. Maybe someone here implemented the first iteration of this. It doesn't matter whether you're using WhatsApp, Telegram or what have you. Whenever there's a "share live-location" option, the defaults suck.

It's most often either 15 minutes, 1 hour or 8 hours.

99% of the time I need it for 2 hours and a half. If it's 8 hours, I forget about it and it wastes all of my phone battery (this often leads to dangerous situations in my country). If it's 15 minutes, people start nagging me to turn it back on.

What's with this limitation? It seems like a super easy thing to parametrize. The feature is nice but I always get this bug behind my ear. Why is it this way?
