Ask HN: Is a bad traction a judgment call?

Hacker News - Sun, 09/15/2024 - 6:51pm

Hi, there are 2 types of traction

Just posting somewhere (it can be ph, hn, post on reddit) -> Thousands of users -> Heaps of subscriptions. Instant traction that doesn't stop. These are usually the guys who make 5-10k$ MRR in 2 months

hard growth. The all action from point 1 and another plus 100's of different actions (article writing, google ads, cold emails and lots and lots of stuff) - hard and slow growth. Thousands of dollars of investment in advertising and marketing hypothesis testing. Hard and slow growth, scrambling forward. And after years, you come to your long awaited 1-2k$ of revenue.

And so I'm wondering if there's anyone out there who found themselves in point 2 (I'm there) and was able to turn the tide.

Would love to hear your stories.

Show HN: QuCast – Everyone can generate AI podcasts

Hacker News - Sun, 09/15/2024 - 6:27pm

Hey! I'm building a podcast app that allows the listeners to generate their own podcasts.

I listen to a lot of Huberman. While I'm driving, walking, working out, or anywhere else I want to listen to something. But I've run out of Huberman content & find myself wanting more.

With life-like LLMs & TTS becoming ever cheaper, I thought why don't I just generate my own? In QuCast you can enter a topic or URL to base a podcast episode on. You can then chat to an outline to refine it in whatever way you want, then generate the speech.

I love the podcast format, & find popping essays, articles, or research papers in it work fairly well. I'm not sure if something like this already exists? There are definitely podcast generators for creators but why not for the listeners themselves? Maybe it was too expensive before, but my math works out to about 2 cents for a 10 minute podcast (more if you want a better voice like ElevenLabs).

Anyways, let me know what y'all think! To generate your own you'll need to download the app. And yes, this was mainly hacked together over a week using Cursor (It built that nice auto scrolling transcript view in the app all by itself?!). Mobile app + Website + Backend. Podcasts/outlines are written by Claude. Voice is from Google (free experimental).

Tell HN: DanBC has died

Hacker News - Sun, 09/15/2024 - 6:03pm

I am sorry to announce that long-time HN contributor DanBC died last month after a prolonged period of ill health. May his legacy continue to inspire, and his contributions to this place and the wider world be remembered. Rest in peace, Dan.

https://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/media/53jhyy44/neurodiversity-in-gloucestershire-summer-2024.pdf

"Sadly Dan Beale Cocks, the wonderful Co-Chair of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Partnership Board died on 21 August 2024 after a long illness. Dan made a fantastic contribution to improving mental health and coproduction in Gloucestershire for many years and he will be greatly missed.

Before Dan died, we asked if we could plan an annual Dan Beale Cocks Celebration of Best Practice in Coproduction and he was delighted with the idea. It is intended to take this forward in collaboration with the other Partnership Boards."
