Ask HN: Did HN just get hacked and leak passwords?

Hacker News - Sun, 09/15/2024 - 9:26pm

Got an email security alert from gmail about someone logging into an old forgotten gmail account with my actual password.

Well, that gmail account was one I hadn't used in years as I was going to replace it with my HN profile contact email, but never did.

I often create a burner gmail account for social media accounts and use the same password as the social media login.

I've changed my passwords, but figured I'd ask here to warn others of a possible security breach.

Show HN: Launching BookMe – Simplify Your Appointment Scheduling Process

Hacker News - Sun, 09/15/2024 - 8:57pm

Hey, HN community

I'm Omar, and I'm excited to share something I've been working on BookMe! As someone who’s juggled the chaos of appointment scheduling, I built BookMe to make life easier for freelancers, small business owners, and anyone needing a better way to manage their bookings.

With BookMe, you can:

- Generate Simple Booking Links: Shareable links that let clients book appointments without the back-and-forth.

- Customize Approval Processes: Choose between auto-approval or manual validation based on what works best for you.

- Focus on What Matters: Let BookMe handle your calendar while you focus on growing your business.

I'm offering free early access to HN members who want to test it out. Your feedback will be crucial in helping me refine the platform. If you're interested, check it out here: https://bookme.pricoder.com/.

Looking forward to your thoughts, suggestions, and any questions you might have!

Thanks for taking the time to check it out!

Omar

Behavioral conditioning in public in San Francisco

Hacker News - Sun, 09/15/2024 - 8:27pm

I'm having my food poisoned at 555 Beale Street so I have headaches. I don't know what it is and the staff will deny it. I don't know if its head meds nonconsensually or what but it's causing massive constant physical pain and difficulty thinking. I'm the being followed around by tools like this jackass https://imgur.com/a/OnBJQgj who are sniffing at me (see "sniffy" the lab rat). What the fuck is going on? How am I being poisoned? I'm already in contact with just about anyone I can think of that has any leverage at all warning them away from San Francisco.

Show HN: An API that returns random Alan Perlis epigrams

Hacker News - Sun, 09/15/2024 - 8:21pm

Alan Perlis was a computer scientist known for being the first recipient of the Turing Award and for his contributions to the ALGOL and APL languages.

Among his other work, he published a series of epigrams in 1982 about computers and programming that have since been widely quoted. I like these quotes for being humorous and sometimes hiding nuggets of wisdom, so I had the idea of making a website and API that puts them prominently on display.

This project was also just an excuse for myself to try out some new tools like Fly.io and using AI code editing tools to build frontends with React (so far my opinion with the latter is that it's helpful, but it still requires a lot of hand holding).
