Show HN: Iglu – micro-journaling with on-device intelligence, for iOS

Fri, 04/04/2025 - 1:07pm

Hey Hacker News!

I've built an iOS app called iglu to make journaling easy and engaging.

Write short entries, make threads with them, search them by meaning, and revisit them through intelligent recommendations related to your recent writing — all that with on-device, non-generative AI. iglu is the most private journaling app out there.

We use on-device, non-generative AI to power: • Semantic search. If you're looking for something you wrote but don't remember the exact words, you can describe the general theme or topic of the entry you're looking for, and iglu will find it for you — it understands the meaning of what you write! • Intelligent recommendations. When you're not looking for anything specific or just want a feed to scroll through, check out the 'Explore' tab. You'll find recommendations of older entries that iglu thinks are related to what you've been writing recently. It's a fun and easy way to remember and revisit your life!

iglu protects and respects your privacy: • No accounts. That's right; you won't have to sign up or tell us your name or e-mail. We don't collect any data. We have no idea who's using iglu. • Everything runs on-device. We don't even have servers. • iCloud backup. Your data only lives on your phone and your personal iCloud account (as an encrypted backup). • Face ID locking. By default, iglu is locked behind Face ID.

I'm excited to get feedback and opinions from the community — please share your thoughts!

Cheers! Rafa Guimarães

Ask HN: Will US tariffs boost robotics for manufacturing research?

Fri, 04/04/2025 - 1:05pm

Doing more manufacturing in the US may mean inventing more advanced robots to do it rather than hiring people.

Show HN: Bookmarklet to Loop HTML Videos

Fri, 04/04/2025 - 12:22pm

Figured others may enjoy a lightweight bookmarklet approach to looping HTML videos. Click to set loop start, set loop end, and clear loop. By default, a toast message shows loop status, but this can be changed to a lighter console log. Cheers!

Ask HN: As a Founder, is this business model compelling?

Fri, 04/04/2025 - 12:15pm

I recently launched an independent sales agency specializing in early-stage startups. My model is adapted from my experience as an independent manufacturer's rep. for electric utility products used to transmit power from generation to end-users.

In an overly simplistic summary, I am offering to work with companies under a performance-based contract that requires payment only when something is sold. It is backed by an agreement that is cancelable, with a 30-day written notice, if I don’t produce the agreed upon performance metrics. The macro trends that make me think this is an interesting approach in today’s environment are as follows:

1. Higher interest rates and less availability to capital is making seed funding harder to secure 2. Investors are aligning with more efficient and cost-conscious startups 3. Runway and cashflow are more important than ever because funding rounds are taking longer

So, do you think this is an interesting approach or am I missing something? As an aside, I have been a long time reader of HN and I am so grateful for the interesting, intelligent, and thought provoking comments. Thank you in advance for any you may offer to my post!
