Ask HN: WTF is nightly and how did it get installed on my system?

Thu, 11/14/2024 - 4:01am

OK. I know it's from mozilla but how and why is it on my system? I've just done a windows update and there's Nightly. Recently installed and recommended.

I love firefox, mainly because it's not chrome. (Don't really have anything against google except for the fact that they are too big and powerful and need to die.)

Browsers are so integral to what's going on on the desktop that I cannot believe that I installed this. Especially since I've never believed that private browsing is in anyway useful or private.

What happened?

Is It Time to Step Away from Coding After 10 Years?

Thu, 11/14/2024 - 3:53am

After more than a decade of daily coding, I'm questioning whether to step back. When I take coding breaks, my energy and focus improve, but returning to coding brings back procrastination and fatigue. While I still enjoy the intellectual challenge, the industry’s saturation with AI tools has made coding feel less fulfilling and original. Financially, coding has been my best source of leverage aside from investing. For those who’ve stepped away, how did you find the courage to make the change and replace that leverage (and fun)?

Ask HN: What are the risks of NFC-scanning your passport on LinkedIn?

Thu, 11/14/2024 - 3:53am

Microsoft LinkedIn is asking you to NFC-scan your passport to get a "Verified" badge (not sure what being verified does, perhaps nothing, but they sure want you to get it). They use a third-party startup called Persona to implement the NFC-scan; https://withpersona.com/solutions/persona-marketplace seems like they mainly focus on KYC, AML, fraud detection and such. What are the potential risks of uploading NFC passport data to a startup which shares data with LinkedIn? Can the holder of this NFC data then use it to impersonate me on other sites that require passport verification?

Show HN: Sprunki Retake – Horror Music Creation Game – Play Online Free

Thu, 11/14/2024 - 3:46am

Hi HN,

I've launched Sprunki Retake, a mod version of Sprunki (which was inspired by the Incredibox music-mixing game).

The game builds upon the original Sprunki's music-mixing mechanics while introducing new features and gameplay elements. Like its predecessor, it focuses on creating an engaging musical experience through interactive gameplay.

I'd love to get feedback from the HN community on the game mechanics and music integration.

Show HN: I created a tool that converts designs into responsive HTML email

Thu, 11/14/2024 - 3:42am

Hey HN! Like many of you, I absolutely hate writing HTML emails. Nested tables everywhere, client compatibility issues, and that feeling when you need to modify something in those deeply nested elements... pure pain.

While there are plenty of drag-n-drop email builders out there, I still found myself diving into code for custom stuff. That's when I discovered MJML - it's amazing at handling all the tedious HTML email stuff and makes the code actually maintainable.

Then I thought - what if I could combine MJML with AI to just... look at a design and write the code for me? After a few months of development, I built [paste2email.com](http://paste2email.com).

How it works:

1. Paste your email design image (or just describe what you want in plain text)

2. The latest Claude-3.5-Sonnet(2024-10-22) model generates MJML code for you

3. Use the built-in variable system to easily swap content

4. See live preview(mobile & desktop) as MJML compiles to HTML

5. Export everything with Handlebars support - just plug in your variables and you're done

6. Connect it to your email service (like nodemailer) and ship it!

\To get you started, you’ll get 10 free credits. That’s enough to generate 3 emails and tweak one of them, or go for 2 emails with 4 rounds of refinements.

---

I built this specifically for developers who, like me, hate the tedious parts of HTML email development but need more control than drag-n-drop builders offer.

Would love to hear your feedback! You can try logging in with email to check out an actual email I created using this tool.

Ask HN: Energy Policy Background, Passion for Coding – Career Advice?

Thu, 11/14/2024 - 3:30am

I have a background in mechanical engineering and a master’s in Renewable Energy. I spent a few years working on mini-grid sector before moving to a think tank/non-profit, where I focused on energy policy at the national level. My work there involved energy system modeling (primarily using PyPSA), and I discovered a real passion for coding through this experience.

Now, I’m currently unemployed due to limited opportunities in the policy field where I’m based. I’d like to transition into tech roles that integrate my experience in energy/climate with programming. I’m open to any advice on fields to explore or specific areas where I should upskill.

Thanks for any guidance!
