Ask HN: How to get started with a sustainable bootstrapped business of your own?

Wed, 07/22/2026 - 1:50pm

Experienced Software Engineer working in Big Tech since the past decade. I'm at a point in my life where I'm feeling pretty done with a daily 9-5 job especially because of the overwhelming demands and random priority changes that expect you work beyond scheduled hours.

I could do this in my 20s and before I had a family but I've realized that it has become increasingly hard for me lately to manage everything especially raising a family. I'd like to spend time daily with my kids and don't want to pull 40+ hour work weeks anymore.

I feel like a sustainable pace would be working 3-4 hours a day and building something. I love building things so that always excites me but I'm not so excited/challenged by the people aspect of a job where you are required to be influential across orgs especially in as a Senior engineer in BigTech.

Anyway, all of this is just context for what I've been thinking since long: to quit my BigTech job and build something of my own on the side that generates just enough income for me to sustain and help raise my family. I'm at a stage financially where I have some cushion but not enough to be fully FIRE'd so I will need some income to sustain mortgage + kids + lifestyle.

Where do I start? What ideas do I explore? If any of you did it, what was your experience like?

Show HN: Cloud deployment abstracted into one line of code

Wed, 07/22/2026 - 1:47pm

Hi HN, Lucas here!

My cofounder and I shared the same frustration: deploying to the cloud shouldn't be harder than running your code locally. Yet somehow it always is.

We also think most cloud usage is wasteful. You shouldn't blindly push everything to the cloud. So we built Verlex, a hybrid system that only deploys to the cloud when your local machine can't handle it. When it does, it picks the cheapest available provider with the exact hardware you need. The entire pipeline is abstracted down to one line of code. You deploy in seconds instead of hours.

We'd love to hear: what frustrates you most about cloud deployment?

Ask HN: Anyone working on practical robotics (cobots) for the home?

Wed, 07/22/2026 - 1:43pm

I'm specifically interested in people either building or buying 6 degrees of freedom robotic arms and rails and then integrating them with vision and sensors and tool changing.

The deployment target is either a garage or a home "utility" room where the robot would be mounted to a table or ceiling mounted and intent might be sorting hardware, doing laundry or packing suitcases.

The cobots I'm interested in are Universal Robots UR5, UR10 (you're gushing with cash to experiment) or down to AR4-class hardware, or SO-101 plus lerobot (you're doing a lot of making).
