Ask HN: User IDs in app share links

Hacker News - Fri, 05/30/2025 - 4:42am

A thing I've noticed recently is more and more apps including some sort of "share id" query string parameter when you copy a link to share content.

These parameters are then (sometimes) used to surface a banner in the app when the receiver of the link opens it. Something like "user so and so shared this with you, want to follow them?". I'm presuming they are also used for ad/data mining/network building purposes under the hood.

For example Instagram adds an `igsh` parameter to share links while Youtube and Spotify add an `si` parameter.

I guess these are a continuation of the `utm` type parameters used for marketing. But they feel a way more creepy and invasive when operating on a personal level than a marketing campaign level.

Also the user isn't made aware of this parameter at all. A user link could get sent onwards and would identify the user as a source long after they are out of the loop.

Any thoughts on these practices? Is there an opt out somewhere?

Tell HN: Namecheap pre-purchasing searched domain names?

Hacker News - Fri, 05/30/2025 - 4:31am

Yesterday afternoon, I was playing around with domain name ideas and landed on getfitgpt.com Checked it out on namecheap.com nice, it's available. Mind you, it was the first time I had ever typed or even imagined this domain name before.

Today I decided that it has a ring to it and I'll go ahead and just buy it.

What do you know, it's already bought...

Checked whois getfitgpt.com:

Registry Domain ID: 2987595751_DOMAIN_COM-VRSN Registrar WHOIS Server: whois.namecheap.com Registrar URL: http://www.namecheap.com Updated Date: 0001-01-01T00:00:00.00Z Creation Date: 2025-05-29T23:29:02.00Z Registrar Registration Expiration Date: 2026-05-29T23:29:02.00Z Registrar: NAMECHEAP INC

The timing is also suspicious: 23:29:02, as if it was a script that was scheduled to buy searched domain names at midnight?

Namecheap was the only domain lookup I used, I don't trust godaddy. Apparently I can't trust namecheap also anymore?

I mean there's just too many coincidences.

Show HN: I redirected 10K+ URLs in 5 minutes

Hacker News - Fri, 05/30/2025 - 4:17am

Last month, I migrated a client’s website with over 10,000 URLs. The old site had messy, hardcoded links, and manually setting up 301 redirects would’ve taken days. That's why I created Redirectify, a tool that helps you redirect in minutes, not hours, with the help of AI.

Ask HN: Do we need AGI to filter spam?

Hacker News - Fri, 05/30/2025 - 4:17am

Given that we now have PhD-level agentic reasoning AI models I was wondering how is it possible that spam still a problem.

Does spam filtering requires super intelligence?
